Questions About the Digital Nomad Residence Permit

The Digital Nomad Visa allows you to work remotely from Spain on a long-term basis, but it is issued for 1 year. Applications are submitted at the consulate of your country of citizenship or residence. You must provide original paper documents and printed sworn translations.

The Residence Permit, on the other hand, is issued for 3 years. The application is submitted online from within Spain, and all documents are submitted in digital format.

You must earn at least 200% of the Spanish minimum interprofessional salary (SMI). As of March 2025, this amounts to:
  • €2,763/month for a single applicant
  • €3,798/month for a family of two
  • €4,144/month for a family of three
  • +€345/month for each additional family member
  • Application review: 20 working days
  • Fingerprint appointment: up to 30 calendar days
  • Card production: up to 30 calendar days after fingerprinting
In total, the process takes about 3 months.

If you apply from within Spain, the residence permit is issued for 3 years, with the possibility to renew it for 2 more years.

If you apply at a consulate abroad, you will receive a 1-year Digital Nomad Visa. This visa is not a full residence permit but allows you to enter Spain and then apply for the 3-year residence permit from inside the country.

Yes. Spouses and children can relocate with you. The application can be submitted:
  • At the same time as the main applicant (even if family members are outside of Spain), or
  • After the main applicant’s permit is approved (this option takes longer but is also valid).
If you're not legally married, you can register a civil partnership (pareja de hecho) in Spain. Parents or adult children can only be included if you can prove they are financially dependent on you.
Yes, if:
  • You've worked at your current job for at least 3 months, and
  • The company has been operating for over 1 year.
In addition to the standard documents, you’ll need:
  • A contract with your employer
  • Proof of the company’s legal existence
  • A letter from the employer confirming your salary and remote work arrangement
  • Proof of 3 years of work experience or a university diploma
Yes, if:
  • You’ve been registered as a freelancer or self-employed for at least 3 months
  • You have ongoing contracts with clients
  • The companies you work with have existed for over 1 year
You’ll need the following in addition to the main documents:
  • Proof of freelance registration
  • Documentation confirming the existence of the companies you work with
  • Contracts with your clients
  • Proof of 3 years of work experience
Note: Freelancers and self-employed applicants do not need a social security certificate if they register in the Spanish social security system. In this case, you must submit a free-form declaration in Spanish and include it in your application.
Yes, if you are an IE, but no more than 20% of your income can come from Spanish clients. At least 80% must come from international clients.
On average, digital nomads pay 20–24% in taxes in Spain. However, each case is different, so we recommend a consultation with our tax advisor.
No, that is no longer a requirement for renewal. However, you must still meet tax obligations and pay social security contributions.
Once your application is submitted, you’ll receive a document that allows you to remain in Spain legally, even if your Schengen visa expires. However, you should not leave Spain during this period, as re-entry would require a new visa.
Yes, it can be renewed after 3 years, provided you still meet the program requirements: stable income, remote work, and tax compliance.
Yes. After 5 years of legal residence, you can apply for permanent residency, and after 10 years, you can apply for Spanish citizenship.
You’ll have 10 days to leave Spain. The rejection does not affect your ability to apply for other visas in the future. After a rejection, you have two options:
  • 1. Appeal the decision
  • 2. Resubmit your application with corrected or additional documents
